Life lessons at 28: Fighting demons, not having everything & being happy anyway

I just turned 28, which just so happens to be my lucky number - yay! As I sit and reflect on my 28 years I realise I have wasted a lot of time in the wrong relationships, friendships, jobs and negative mindset. Looking back I wouldn't have it any other way! I needed to use these years to fight my demons, learn how to be grateful and how to respect myself so I can find other people that do too. I don't have much to physically show for my 28 years; no house, no husband, no children, no big earning job, no fancy car but what i do have is happiness! Here are my life lessons at 28.

Life Lessons at 28

1) You cannot plan how your life is going to turn out...

My current personal life situation was not what I had planned AT ALL! When I was younger I had envisioned myself in a lovely big house, married with children by now. Why? Because that is what society has conditioned us to think we should have by our late twenties.

2) ...but everything really does happen for a reason

I don’t have any of the things society and people around me think I should have… and I’m still happy!

3) The bad times always end...

Horrible bosses, stressful jobs, awful relationships & toxic friendships all come to an end. As much as you feel consumed by the shit times, I promise they do end and you will become stronger because of them.

4) ...and they teach you resilience, strength & gratitude like nothing else can

Emetophobia no longer rules my life, I easily manage my anxiety, I have recovered from binge eating and for the first time in my entire 28 years I can say I am at peace with my demons and happy with who I am.

5) Be your own cheerleader

The one person you can 100% rely on is yourself. Be your own biggest cheerleader it can only result in success.

6) Self-love is everything

Taking care of yourself is not selfish, it is absolutely essential! You cannot help, care for or be there for anyone else unless you are fully taking care of yourself.

7) Learning how to spend time alone is the best thing you will ever do

Solo trip, breakfast date, walk, pamper...anything! Realign your mind, take a breather and relax.

8) The universe does have your back

You just have to believe that everything is working as it should and it is. Everything will always make sense in the end.

9) Comparison really is the biggest thief of joy

Live your life and don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is on a different path. You never know what people are really going through. Find what makes you happy.

10) Don’t waste your life living it for others

Life your life doing the things that make you happy. Follow your heart without the opinions of others.

11) Being positive is a choice

At 23 I decided to change my life and stop being negative AF about everything. In return I transformed my life. Being positive and optimistic now comes naturally. It really is a choice that starts with you.

12) Your friendships will dramatically change

There’s nothing like going through the life events of your twenties to dramatically change your friendships. University, careers, house moves, weddings and babies change people’s priorities massively and you will go through times of feeling lonely because of it.

13) Life is not a competition

Celebrate the successes of your friends without wanting what they have. Everyone moves through life at different paces and everyone deserves their choices to be celebrated no matter how big or small.

14) Do the things that scare you and make you happy in equal measures

Happiness is truly found outside of your comfort zone. The things that scare you will bring the biggest reward.

15) Be the person you needed

Help and teach others the things you wished you knew. Be there for those going through the things you have been through. Be that person you needed in your darkest times. There is no better reward in life than giving back.

I now have freedom from my troubled mind, I have incredible memories and the most wonderful circle of friends. I live in a state of gratitude, I appreciate every little thing and I have my found true passion in life through creating this blog to help heal others. Thank you universe, everything is exactly as it is meant to be right now and I can not wait to see what the next year brings.
